Getting from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by bus

Taking the bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is definitely the cheapest and most convenient option out there.

Below I’ll walk you through all the steps you need to take when traveling to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore by bus.

Step 1: Purchase your ticket online

While you can buy your ticket at the bus station on the same day, it’s best to book online to save time and ensure you get a seat.

It’s particularly important to book in advance if you’re traveling during Chinese New Year, weekends, or public holidays.

I recommend and use Easybook to compare prices and buy bus tickets in Singapore and Malaysia.

You should also know that there isn’t a main bus terminal in Singapore. Instead, each bus operator has its own bus station across the country.

If you want to save money on transportation, make sure to choose a bus station closest to your accommodation in Singapore.

You can choose from one of these bus stations in Singapore:

  • Queen Street
  • City Plaza
  • Golden Mile Complex
  • Concorde Hotel Singapore

Some of the most popular bus operators serving the route from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur include Delima Express, Luxury Coach, 707Inc, Golden Coach Express, etc.

Buses are comfortable as they all have reclining seats and decent legroom.

Step 2: Leaving Singapore

I highly recommend arriving at the bus station at least 15-30 minutes in advance. I chose to take the bus from Queen Street in Singapore. There was a small counter along the main road where I had to redeem my ticket (which I bought online).

Some of the bus stations have free drinking water fountains and toilets. The one at Queen Street has both.

Once the bus arrives, just show your ticket to the driver and he will store your belongings in the luggage compartment.

Note: There’s no toilet on the bus but there will be one toilet stop about halfway through. You can also use the toilet at the Malaysia immigration checkpoint.

Step 3: Singapore Border Checkpoint

The first stop of your travel from Singapore to KL will be at the Singapore Woodlands checkpoint. You can leave your luggage inside the bus and only need to bring your passport, bus ticket, and Singapore arrival card.

The immigration officer will then scan your passport and take your fingerprints which should take about 15-30 minutes.

For me personally, this took only about 5 minutes but it might not be the case for everyone.

I was traveling with my parents and for some reason, they both had to go through a manual check and the line was extremely long.

Normally buses are only allowed to wait at the border for a maximum of 30-40 minutes. Luckily, the line moved pretty fast and it took them about 20-30 minutes to clear through immigration.

If you’re traveling alone, make sure to note down your bus plate number and ask another traveler to notify the driver in case you get delayed at immigration.

Step 4: Malaysia Border Checkpoint

The next stop will be at the Malaysian border. This time you’ll have to bring your luggage. The immigration officer will stamp your passport and you’ll be directed to another line for customs control where they will scan your luggage.

Once you’re done, you can hop back on the bus and be off to Kuala Lumpur.

Step 5: Arriving in Malaysia

The total journey from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by bus takes approximately 5-6 hours.

Most buses will stop at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), KL’s main bus terminal located about 13 km from the city center.

From there, you can hire a taxi to get to the city center or walk to Bandar Tasik Selatan (just follow the pink signs) and then take a train to KL Sentral.

If you want to skip the extra step above, make sure to check the drop-off point when booking your Singapore to KL bus ticket.

You can choose Berjaya Times Square or Imbi as the drop-off location if you’re staying in Bukit Bintang or KL Sentral if you’re staying in Little India or Chinatown.

Price of Singapore to KL bus ticket

Is there a train from Singapore to KL?

The direct train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur was discontinued a few years back, so now you’ll first need to take a bus to Singapore Woodlands checkpoint.

After clearing through immigration and customs, you’ll have to go to Johor Bahru Sentral. From there, take a train to Gemas railway station before transferring to KL Sentral.

As you can see, taking the train is more time-consuming which is why I recommend traveling by bus instead.

Getting back from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore

Most buses traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore will depart from TBS. To get to TBS, you first need to go to KL Sentral. From there, take the train to Bandar Tasik Selatan and follow the pink signs to get to TBS.

Alternatively, you can choose a bus operator departing from Berjaya Times Square, Imbi, or KL Sentral.

The next step will be similar to the above but in reverse. You’ll have to go through immigration and then custom control before arriving in Singapore.

Again, make sure to choose a drop-off point in Singapore that’s closest to your hotel.

The KL to Singapore bus ticket costs about US$ 20. You can check the bus schedule and buy your ticket by clicking the link below.

Hello. You’re welcome :) It’s too early to book the bus ticket for 14 February 2024 that’s why there isn’t any bus operator listed. Try to book your ticket again in December 2023 or January 2024.
