Macondé viewpoint is without a doubt the most popular viewpoint in Mauritius, providing unparalleled views over the turquoise waters of the southwest coast and Le Morne Brabant.
Located in the village of Baie du Cap, along a hairpin bend, the viewpoint can be accessed from the main road through a narrow set of stairs.
However, due to its popularity, the viewpoint can get crowded especially during the weekend.
And although the main viewpoint is still worth visiting, I recommend checking out the alternate viewpoint if you want to skip the crowds. The great news is that it can be reached by hiking for about 30 minutes only.
So keep reading to find out how to visit the Baie du Cap Macondé viewpoint in Mauritius.

Where is Macondé Viewpoint?
Macondé viewpoint is found along a hairpin bend in the village of Baie du Cap, on the south coast of Mauritius. It’s about a 15 minutes drive from Le Morne Beach.
There isn’t a parking lot nearby so you’ll have to leave your car alongside the road. If you’re visiting during the weekend, make sure to go early to get a spot.

Macondé Viewpoint Hiking Trail
While most people only visit the main viewpoint, there is in fact an alternate viewpoint that can be reached by hiking for about 30 minutes. It’s less popular so if you want to skip the crowds, I recommend visiting this one.
Below I’ll walk you through the Macondé viewpoint hiking trail.
- Distance: About 1 km (one way)
- Duration: 30 minutes (one way)
- Difficulty: Easy/moderate
The Macondé viewpoint hiking trail starts immediately behind a small Hindu shrine shown in the photo below (click here for the trailhead location).

Make your way uphill and ensure that you’re heading towards the left in the direction of the ocean. After a few minutes, you will notice some green markings on the trees.
Keep your eyes peeled since the markings aren’t always that obvious on the way up. You’ll then see an orange cable leading up a cliff face. Climb all the way up and immediately turn left.
Note: You’ll also find an alternate route if you keep following the orange cable. Both will lead you to Macondé viewpoint.
After turning left, keep walking by making sure you watch out for the markings. At times, you’ll also find some orange arrows painted on the trees.

Look out for the green and orange markings on the trees
From there, the trail becomes easier to follow (as long as you keep walking in the direction of the orange and green markings).
The most challenging part will be at a cliff face toward the end of the hike. Just hold on to the roots clinging to the cliff to pull yourself up. The hike then becomes easy again until you finally reach the viewpoint.
From there you’ll get a stunning view of the turquoise ocean. If you look to your right, you’ll also be able to spot Le Morne Brabant mountain.

The wind can be quite strong here so be careful to not get too close to the edge. To get down, just follow the green and orange markings.

Is the Macondé Viewpoint Hiking Trail still accessible seeing they did some works over there
Hello. I’ve done the hike a while back, so I’m not sure. The fence seems to be a bit further away from where I ended the hike so I’m guessing it might still be possible to hike up. If you decide to do the hike, please share an update. Thanks.
