Where is Green Cottage Chamarel?

As its name suggests, Green Cottage Chamarel is located in a tiny village called Chamarel, one of the hilliest regions in South Mauritius.

It’s about a 1h15 drive from the airport, 30 minutes from Le Morne or Black River or 1h50 from Grand Baie.

The location is slightly off the beaten path ensuring the utmost peace and quiet. There’s still a great selection of local restaurants nearby and lots of activities to do in the area.

Once you get to Chamarel, enter through the gates of the Seven Colored Earth geopark (free when staying at Green Cottage Chamarel) and drive for a few minutes until you see a sign on your right. From there, you need to drive for about 1.5 km along a winding track road before reaching the cottage.

About Green Cottage Chamarel

Set atop a hill, Green Cottage Chamarel is beautifully decorated with rustic furnishings and vintage pieces providing a nice cozy atmosphere. The cottage definitely feels like a home away from home with all the amenities you would need to ensure a comfortable stay.

It features two ensuite bedrooms with two additional beds in the living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, WiFi, satellite TV, heating system, fireplace and lots of books and board games.

The front door of the cottage opens up to a beautiful tropical garden with tons of colorful flowers and plants with an unbeatable mountain view.

Although it’s located in a pretty secluded location, you can feel completely safe while staying at Green Cottage Chamarel thanks to the alarm system and security cameras all around the cottage and in the parking lot. There’s also an electric generator in case of a power cut.

The bedroom

Green Cottage Chamarel features two ensuite bedrooms. One of them looks out to the garden and endless layers of mountains that seem to stretch out for miles.

If you’re an early riser, you can simply open the curtains and watch as the sunrays peek through the mountains directly from the comfort of your bed.

The king-size bed is extremely comfortable with a thick cover to keep you warm on a cold night. There’s also a heater bedside the bed if you need the extra warmth. On a hot summer day, you can turn on the air-conditioning or fan.

There’s also a full-length mirror and a big wardrobe with extra sheets, towels, pillows and hangers as well as a safe and first-aid kit.

The bathroom

Besides the bedroom is a bathroom with a hot water shower, toilet, hairdryer, mirror and sink. Toiletries and hand sanitizers are also provided. But the best part is the electric towel warmer that’s perfect for the cold winter days.

The kitchen

Having a fully-equipped kitchen is super convenient when you’re traveling on a budget. The kitchen at Green Cottage Chamarel has a fridge, oven, gas stovetop, toaster, microwave, kettle and all the necessary cooking utensils.

There are some condiments provided as well as sugar, milk, tea, coffee, butter and juices so you don’t need to bring your own. Bottles of water are provided free of charge. Also in the kitchen is a washing machine, dishwasher and cleaning supplies.

If you’d like to host a little private BBQ party, you can make use of the BBQ grill and charcoal.

The living room

The living/dining room is very spacious and beautifully furnished with huge windows overlooking the lush valley and mountains.

I highly recommend opening the slider doors to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings (you don’t need to worry about mosquitoes getting in as repellent is provided).

To the left are some rattan chairs and a coffee table and to the right is a small dining table that can fit up to six people.

The potted plants and flowers add a nice touch of greenery and the antique décors provide an overall vintage and rustic vibe to the room.

At the back is a lounge area with some comfy couches, satellite TV and phone. There are also board games and a huge collection of books and magazines to keep you occupied during your stay.

In the middle is a fireplace flanked by two single beds. There’s plenty of firewood outside so you can cozy up at night in front of the fireplace while enjoying a cup of tea.

The view

The main reason why Green Cottage Chamarel is one of the best places to stay in Chamarel is because of the view. I can’t think of any other accommodations in Mauritius that boast such incredible panoramic views that seem to stretch out for miles.

The small fire pit and outdoor lounge chairs allow you to kick back and relax while taking in the sweeping views of the lush green valley dotted by huge trees with the mountains towering in the backdrop.

If you enjoy bird watching, you’ll be in for a treat as it’s possible to spot various species of birds like the Paille en Queue and Echo Parakeet.

 Things to do

On the left side of the cottage is a small forest trail that takes you around the property. If you’d like to practice yoga, you’ll find two yoga mats in the bedroom wardrobe.

I recommend doing the Shinrin Yoku which means forest bathing in Japanese. It’s a type of meditation that allows you to clear your mind while connecting to the natural surroundings. You’ll find all the explanations on how to do this type of meditation inside the cottage.

You’ll also find a great collection of books as well as board games or you can simply do nothing! Just sit around the fire pit and take in the view while listening to the chirping of birds. That’s what vacations are all about after all!
